1. The Case

The grocery bag hits the counter. Before the eggs come out, the cat is on it.

She does not chew it, does not climb in. She licks it, long slow strokes along the plastic, working the surface like she is grooming another cat.

The dry-cleaning bag gets the same treatment. So does the shrink wrap on a new pillow.

Paper bags and fabric hold no interest. Only plastic.

2. Your Theory?

Most owners assume the bag smells like whatever it carried, and the cat is chasing a food residue. A few worry it is pica, the compulsion to eat non-food objects.

3. The Reveal

The bag itself is edible-adjacent.

Manufacturers coat plastic film with slip agents to keep sheets from sticking together during production. The most common slip agents are fatty acid amides, often derived from animal or plant fats.

To a human nose, these coatings are odorless. To a cat, they read as protein.

Cats have olfactory sensitivity far sharper than a human's, and they are especially tuned to fatty compounds. A bag straight off the roll carries enough fat-derived residue to register as low-grade food.

Biodegradable bags amplify the effect. Many contain cornstarch, gelatin, or fish oil as binding agents.

The tongue confirms what the nose suspected. Feline taste receptors do not detect sweet, but they are highly responsive to amino acids and fats.

For a subset of cats, mostly Oriental breeds like Siamese and Burmese, there is a second layer. These cats are often weaned earlier than their instincts prefer, and the residual suckling drive attaches to soft, chewable materials.

Plastic film is the closest household match.

Sound and texture do the rest. The crinkle mimics prey rustling in leaves, and the cool, slick surface is unlike anything else in the house.

4. Case Closed

✓ Store bags out of reach. Under-sink cabinets with child locks, drawers, or a lidded bin near the door.

✓ Licking is usually harmless. Chewing and swallowing is not, and thin film can twist through the intestines in ways that require surgery.

✓ Offer a legal substitute. A silicone lick mat with a smear of wet food gives the same textural feedback without the risk, and works especially well for cats with a strong suckling drive.

✓ If the licking is new, escalating, or paired with weight loss, that is a vet visit. Sudden-onset pica can signal anemia, dental pain, or thyroid disease.

5. Next Case

Next case on the desk: a dog who stares at his empty food bowl for an hour after eating. The bowl is licked clean. He is not asking for more.
